SAMAs Entries Are Now Open

Dj Sbu and Zahara, who scooped 8 awards last MTN SAMAs

The wait is over, entries for the 19th annual MTN South African Music Awards are now open; and the music premier event is just a couple of months away. It will still be held at Sun City, so don’t worry about driving to another venue for now. Taking place on May 10th 2013, this star-studded event will be broadcasted live on television.

SAMA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi told Parable Magazine, “The event was simplified and streamlined last year   to create the best awards ceremony on the continent and it proved to be a huge success. Winning a SAMA is the highest award a musician or producer can win in South African music. Although we have tweaked it slightly and changed some categories from the last awards, we are keeping a similar format while once again paying tribute to the best in the local music industry and the most talented creative people involved in it.”

With numerous singles released in the gospel industry this year alone, the Best Traditional faith Music Album and Best Contemporary Faith Music Album categories should be flooded with entries. The closing date for the entries is November 30th 2013. All the rules and entry process are available on the MTN SAMA website,

As promised, Sibisi has made a few changes to the category names. The Best Sokkie Dans becomes Kontemporêre Musiek Album, the Best Smooth Urban Album has changed to Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album, and the Best Street Urban Album name has been converted to Best Rap Album. Previously, the Best Live DVD award was rewarded to the producer only but was adjusted in a way that both the artist and producer would receive the award. There will now be one award for the Remix of the Year instead of two.
