The 28 year old has an annual charity event that helps impoverished children in his hometown at the Emmaus Community Center. Out of his busy schedule Tumelo spoke to Parable Magazine. This is what he had to say to us.
Can you please tell Parable Magazine about your childhood?
I have three siblings, two brothers and my sister past away in 2004. I grew up with both parents but my dad past away in 1995. I had a decent childhood overall, but things changed in 2003 when I was doing my matric. My mother lost all her investments which were supposed to take me through University in a pyramid scheme.
[callout title= Tumelo Matlala]Â Â You can expect to see me ministering around the country, reaching out to more people. [/callout]
Who inspires you, to do better?
My mother Nomvula Matlala, she’s the strongest and wisest woman I know.
When did you realise that you wanted to be a singer?
In 2001 when I was in my high school choir and also a local choir called Sikhalo Male Voices.
What do you do in your spare time?
Since I work hard, travelling a lot I spend a lot of my free time relaxing trying to recuperate.
How has the feedback on your second album been?
It’s been phenomenal; I’ve been stunned by the way people have been responding to it. I get facebook messages all the time people telling how much they like it and what they favourite songs are. It’s very humbling.
What inspired the “Tumelo Annual Charity Event
The challenges that I faced during my matric year inspired the Charity event. That period inspired me to help others, especially children not to go through what I went through.
Can you tell us something we don’t know about you?
I am a motivational speaker and an actor. Most recent role was a guest appearance on Generation SABC 1.
What is your favourite song from the album (Blessed Generation)?
First track “Akhona Amandlaâ€.
Can you explain how you came up with the title (Blessed Generation)?
I came up with it when I read the book of Exodus chapter 3, when God sent Moses to get the children of Israel from Egypt under Pharaoh’s oppression. Moses asked who shall I say sent me, and God responded saying: “I am, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.†Prophetically those generational blessings are mine and yours today.
Now that your album is out, what more can we expect from you?
You can expect to see me ministering around the country, reaching out to more people.
Invite Tumelo on Facebook “Tumelo “Believer†Matlala” to get addtional information on where you can get the album.
